Case Study 2: Crane Performance
Company: Yacht Builder - USA
Situation
A Yacht Builder of high-caliber yachts had just started installing Steelhead cranes with the hopes that our products could reduce crane manufacturing headaches for their company.
Problem
This Yacht Builder had been fabricating yacht cranes in-house for their own use. They wanted to avoid fragmenting their resources into building engineered cranes and instead find a manufacturer who could accommodate their custom needs and high standards.
Solution
Steelhead worked together with this builder to customize a 4,500 lb crane for installation on a new 157 foot yacht. The tender the Builder wanted to use was a 24 ft. ribbed, hard-bottom, big tubes catamaran-style at a reach of 22 feet. It was heavy-loaded with 2 large outboards and other equipment. The installer asked if they should get another tender but Brent (from Steelhead) said 'Go ahead and lift it.' After a bit of concern over the size of the load, they agreed. During the lift, the yacht actually began listing 5 degrees due to the big load and the captain rushed out to find out what was happening. The 4,500 lb. crane lifted and placed the heavy tender beautifully!
After the lift we weighed the tender in at 5,400 lbs. and only then found out it was 900 lbs. over the crane lift rating! They were impressed with a clear demonstration of superior performance.
Results
This Yacht Builder is now very confident in Steelhead quality and performance and has been installing Steelhead cranes ever since.
