Case Study 1: Customizing to meet needs and price
Company: Yacht Broker - USA/Taiwan
Situation
A Yacht Broker is developing a new line of yachts built in Taiwan that will be distributed in North America. He needed a crane to fit within the current design of the vessel and still be completely functional.
Problem
Could Steelhead fit a crane meeting the requirements into the desired location without having to change the design of the fiberglass coaming?
There were 2 considerations:
- the crane needed to fit into a sloped fibreglass coaming locker
- the crane needed to function safely at its 800lb rating despite design changes
Solution
We recommended our Steelhead "Whisper Davit" rated for 800 lbs that could be customized to suit his special needs. We checked the safety factors using a custom design drawing. We also used this to confirm that we could modify the luffing cylinder and lower the boom angle by 3.5 degrees when the davit was in stowed position. This created a design that fit inside the coaming locker on the flying bridge while also delivering his reach and lift requirements. Steelhead met his compact space needs as well as also protecting the yacht's aesthetics.
This customizing work was simple enough so there was no additional design charge. We were able to get it shipped to his factory in the time he requested. He was so pleased with the price of this product that he decided to add a power boom (luffing) upgrade as well.
Results
The Yacht Broker saved time and money avoiding redesign fees and kept his yacht production on-schedule. He got a custom-fit davit from Steelhead in a compact space that delivers the performance he needs. He was able to keep the clean look of his new design at a great price.
